| →What
flow rate should I use for calibrating my gas detection
instrument? |
| ·For
most gases a flow of .5 lpm (1 SCFH) is sufficient. However,
for chlorine, ammonia, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide
and hydrogen cyanide a flow rate of 1.0 lpm (2 SCFH) may
be required. Please refer to your instrument instruction
manual for recommended flow rates for a specific instrument. |
 |
| →How
often should I calibrate? |
| ·Gas
detection instruments are potential life-saving devices.
Recognizing this fact, Industrial Scientific Corporation
recommends that a functional ("bump") test be performed
on every instrument prior to each day's use. A functional
test is defined as a brief exposure of the monitor to
a known concentration of gas(es) for the purpose of verifying
sensor and alarm operation and is not intended to be a
measure of the accuracy of the instrument. |
| ·Industrial
Scientific further recommends that a full instrument calibration
be performed using a certified concentration(s) of calibration
gas(es) monthly to ensure maximum accuracy. |
| ·If
an instrument fails to operate properly following any
functional "bump" test, a full instrument calibration
should be performed prior to use. |
 |
| →How
far can I draw a gas sample from a confined space with
the SP402 or SP202 sampling pumps? |
| ·You
can draw a sample from a distance of 100ft. (30.5 m) using
either 1/8" Tygon or 3/16" Tygon lined w/Teflon tubing. |
 |
| |
| →What
type of battery powers the instruments? |
| ·The
typical power source for our gas detection instruments
is rechargeable Ni-Cad. Depending on your instrument choice,
there other options as well. For 200 Series instruments
several models use disposable alkaline batteries, and
our 300 and 400 Series instruments can utilize a disposable
Lithium battery pack. The iTX and VX500 instruments offer
both Alkaline and rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries. |
 |
| |
| →How
long do the instruments run on full charge? |
| ·Typical
run time of our instruments is 10 hours. For the 300 &
400 Series instruments using a Lithium battery pack the
run time jumps up to 14 hours. |
 |
| |
| →What
are TWA and STEL? |
| ·TWA
stands for Time Weight Average. This in reference to dosages
of toxic gas you may encounter in the work place. It is
based on an 8 hour day/ 40 hour work week. TWA ia a term
established by the American Conference of Governmental
Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). |
| ·STEL
stands for Short Term Exposure Limit. This is the average
amount of gas you can be exposed to in a 15 minute period
with no long term health effects. This may occur 4 times
a day. STEL is a term established by the ACGIH. |
 |
| →Does
Industrial Scientific have fixed point gas detection systems? |
| ·Yes.
Industrial Scientific has different fixed-point monitoring
systems for many gases and many applications. Please visit
our fixed systems product section of the website Fixed
Monitoring Systems. |
 |
| |
| →How
long do sensors last? |
| ·Sensors
used by Industrial Scientific are guaranteed for 1 year
with the exception of the ammonia sensor (it is guaranteed
6 months). Typical life is much greater than that. A combustible
sensor usually lasts in excess of 5 years. Typical life
of CO and H2S sensors are 2-3 years. The MDU420 patented
infrared sensor is warranted for a period of 5 years. |
 |
| →Who
are your distributors and where are they located? |
| ·We
have a distribution network throughout the world. Our
representatives are factory trained in the operation and
maintenance of our products and handle a complimentary
line of safety products. To locate the nearest Industrial
Scientific distributor, click on the Distributor Locator
link Distributor Locator or E-mail info@indsci.com.

 |
| →What
are the filters that come with the sampling pump used
for? |
| ·There
are two filters delivered with Industrial Scientific sampling
pumps. On top of the pumps is a 10 micron dust filter.
This is required for the protection of the internal workings
of the motorized pump. In addition a dust filter/water
stop is supplied. This filter is a .45 micron filter and
it protects the unit from smaller dust particles. It also
stops any liquid from entering the sampling tube, which
in turn protects the sampling pump from any damage if
such liquids as water, gasoline or paint thinner are present
in the sampling area. |
 |
| →How
do I dispose of my empty calibration bottles (cylinders)? |
| ·The
gas calibration cylinders supplied by Industrial Scientific
are disposable. The empty cylinders may be thrown away
as regular trash if vented of all remaining pressure.
Remove the regulator and dispose of the cylinder. Some
companies are required to dispose of these cylinders as
hazardous waste, either by company policies or state regulations.
If your company falls into this category, simply return
the empty cylinders to Industrial Scientific. |
 |
| →Why
do you recommend Pentane calibration gas over the use
of Methane? |
| ·Methane
Calibration has been the standard for years. However,
the typical confined space may contain gases other than
methane. Using pentane as a calibration standard will
adjust the combustible gas sensor in the Lower Explosive
Level (LEL) mode to detect a larger group of hydrocarbons.
The instrument will keep the gas reading in a safe level.
